AUDENS ACT was part of a study team, led by TRIGNOSYS GmbH, which performed the ATM Wireless Communication Study (WiComS) for the SESAR Joint Undertaking (Single European Sky ATM Research).

Among other aspects, one of the main objective of SESAR is to increase the overall efficiency of the air traffic management system, which includes the future communication infrastructure as a key element.

WiComS has assessed wireless communication technologies for future use in ATM systems. Hereby, AUDENS ACT was involved in the following activities:

  • Assessment and verification that currently identified technologies - namely direct air-to-ground and air-to-air connections (L-DACS1/2), satellite based connectivity (ESA IRIS system), and the ground-based airport segment (WiMax) - match the current ATM requirements

  • Consideration of "non-ATM" wireless technologies (e.g. terrestrial mobile systems) with respect to their capabilities to support future ATM services and matching the requirements

  • Study of the suitability of the AMS(R)S bands 1 545 - 1 555 MHz and 1 646.5 - 1 656.5 MHz for future ATM SatCom data-link services and identify factors which may potentially hinder or even block adequate service provision
